Somnath Temple is one of the most revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva near Veraval in Gujarat’s Saurashtra region. This legendary and holy shore temple of Gujarat is backed by a very long history. The temple is dedicated to Someshwara, another name of Lord Shiva , with moon on his head and is first among the twelve jyotirlinga temples in india.

It has been destroyed several times by attackers and plunderers who were lured by the riches at the ancient Somnath Temple  but the good thing is that it was re-built again and again post destruction, the present temple was reconstructed in Chalukya style of Hindu temple architecture and completed in May 1951.Somnath is often called the ‘eternal shrine’; i.e. a shrine that exists forever. Devotees from every nook and corner of the country and globe visit Somnath to pay their tribute to the glorious Jyotirlinga or column of cosmic light of Lord Shiva. Thus each day thousands of devotees gather at the temple to pay a Darshan to Lord Shiva or Someshwara seated here in all majesty.Somnath literally means “The Protector of Moon God”.

Here is the shivling of Somnath Mahadev.

After completing darshan , you can spend your quality time in beach which is just a few distance from the temple. On the way of beach you will find many stalls containing different types of mirror, necklaces , kitchen and many more.I was very impressed with the design of mirrors. They were made up of different type of shells. One can enjoy camel ride also.
